Green Man Festival - Preview Part 1

Green Man Festival - Preview Part 1

by Hector Barley (Google+), 16 August 2009

Key Info Location = Brecon Beacons, Wales Typical Genre = Folk, Psychedelia, Americana Website = Dates = Friday 21st - Sunday 23rd August There’s no such thing as the ‘ultimate festival’ right? Well the Green Man festival endeavors to prove that wrong. Set across 3 days and 5 stages, Green Man promises all the features expected of a truly great festival – fantastic bands, atmosphere and location.
Photobucket So what makes Green Man festivals so special? 1) Independence
Green Man festival is one of few that can boast true independence. This freedom is a refreshing change from the clinical corporate nature of many bigger festivals that can often ruin their authenticity, (even the ‘independent’ latitude is run by giants Festival Republic.) Green Man has become famous for its boutique reputation by bands and fans alike and greatly contributes to the relaxed, enchanting atmosphere of the festival. 2) Location
Let’s face it, Wales hasn’t got all that much to offer; so It is just as well then that Green Man makes full use of the stunning views and landscape of rural Wales. In true fairy tale style, the festival is nestled amongst the Sugar Loaf Mountains in the 20,000 acre Brecon Beacons – one of only 3 National Park in Wales. Glastonbury might have a stone circle, but Green Man has a 598 metre high mountain to offer. (Note of warning, remote mountain beauty rarely comes without rain) 3) Bands
A festival would afterall be pretty terrible without bands (Creamfields take note). However luckily, Green Man is blessed with one of the top line-ups of 2009; its dedicated devotion to showcasing the best in Folk, American Indie and Psychedelia has enabled Green Man to establish itself a Festival niche. As well as an impressive line-up of prominent established headline bands -Animal Collective, Wilco and Jarvis Cocker Green man is also blessed by a wide array of underground artists such as Beach House, Wooden Shjips and Camera Obscura, there is enough to make even Reading festival organisers Green with envy. 4) Additional Information
Where would the modern festival be without a host of extra cultural activities and entertainment? Well, somewhere near V festival (never a good thing). It is just as well then that Green Man encompasses plenty of literature, poetry, comedy and secret gigs. The festival emanates a relaxed and comfortable environment that caters for all – a children area for families, 24 hour drinking license for the hardcore and regularly cleaned toilets for the fussy. While other festivals this year may have gathered substantial press attention and corporate backing, Green Man 2009 modestly looks to beautifully showcase the best of the underground indie scene in the foot of the Welsh mountains.
