J Dilla's mother Ma Dukes starts record label, will release unheard Dilla material
Reports state that J Dilla's mother, Maureen "Ma Dukes" Yancey, has started a label titled Ruff Draft Records.
The label will release some previously unheard Dilla material and the label's first release is Rebirth of Detroit, which is out on June 12th.
"We want to make it more feasible to interact with these children; we don't know how many J. Dilla's we have out there. Somebody has to find them." Dukes said when asked by AllHipHop.com. Ruff Draft Records is also hosting a launch party on May 25th at the Magic Stick in Detroit, which will feature a listening party of "Rebirth of Detroit" and performances by many Detroit artists.
First things first. Happy Birthday J Dilla. Today marks what would have been the late producer's 39th birthday and amid some particularly touching tributes is this video from drummer Karriem Riggins. Part eulogy and part performance, here Riggins plays his own instrumental 'J Dilla The Greatest' as a fitting homage. The track appears on his forthcoming Stones Throw release, Alone Together. Rebirth of Detroit is the initial release of new Hip-Hop label Ruff Draft records and will feature previously unreleased work by the late producer J Dilla who passed away in 2006. [read more]
This February will see the release of The Lost Scrolls Vol. 1, which (as the name suggests) is part of a series of posthumous material from the late hip-hop producer. [read more]
Following the news that J Dilla's 8'000 strong record collection had been found by a record shop owner over in the U.S., it seems that the mother of the late hip-hop producer Maureen 'Ma Dukes' Yancey will be meeting with UHF owner Jeff Bubeck to try and authenticate the collection. [read more]
