Magnetic NW - 'Understand' [Listen]
A wealth of harsh, industrial techno has been mined from the dancefloor landscape of recent, with Preston-based Stephen Pelling unearthing a strong array of tracks under then name of MagneticNW this calendar year.
On offer is the kind of astutely-produced, abrasive, lo-fi scrapes that would be very much at home on the brilliant Perc Trax label, whilst ‘Understand’ here possess a lighter/poppier, driving Fuck Buttons aesthetic – the intro not a million miles away to ‘Surf Solar’ here before veerring off into a bespoke, darker territory. “Post-whatever beats” as Pelling says, mixed with a contemporary motorik edge akin to a busier Borngräber & Strüver. As the elongated, melodic midnight synths hole themselves in, we’re treated to a kind of introspective, melancholic euphoria – imagine taking a solo late-night walk through a graveyard on MDMA.
An EP is due later this year at an unspecified point – it’s unclear if this track will appear on it (however you can catch a preview of the Actress-indebted ‘Hunted’ here, that will be). For now, spend some time getting to know Magnetic NW, and download ‘Understand’ via his Bandcamp where you should spend some quality time.
