New Music Friday: 7th June 2013
If you're frustrated right now because you're stuck in work while it's sunny outside, we're in the same boat - I work three days a week in an office (on stuff that isn't related to music at all, sadly), and definitely wasn't a fan of being trapped inside some place hot and stuffy. I really would much rather have been outside, but thankfully I'm able to make up for that this weekend; as an added bonus, it's barbecue weather, so if you need me, I'll be out the back making the most of the first decent stretch of good weather we've had in quite a while. Long may it continue - though if it's back to being overcast, or even raining, by next Tuesday, you won't hear me complaining. This week's baker's dozen of tracks has a much sunnier disposition than I've had recently - I've even broken with tradition and included a remix or two. Here's what you should be listening to right now...
Saturday, Monday - 'The Road[Track of the Week]
I've been keeping an eye on Ludwig Parment for a while now, and I've been excited about hearing new material from his Saturday, Monday project. It turns out that said excitement was entirely justified, as the Swede dropped an absolutely colossal new song this week. 'The Road' is scheduled for release sometime this summer via Despotz Records, and finds Parment moving in a markedly different direction to previous material; following the minimalistic, techno feel of 'The Ocean'. 'The Road' switches things up again for a more expansive experience. It's also the closest thing to a direct pop song that he's written thus far, and its persistent melody and gradual build make it a delight to listen to. Make sure you get on board with 'The Road' now, because it, along with its creator, will be a big deal very soon.
Postiljonen - 'On the Run'
It's not often that two songs from the same country battle it out for the Track of the Week slot in this column, but this is exactly what happened this week. Postiljonen very narrowly missed out, but their new track is still well worth your while if you're in the market for some swoon-worthy dream-pop. Having recently signed to Best Fit Recordings, the Stockholm-based trio release their debut, Skyer, on July 22nd. I can confirm it's an excellent record - 'On the Run' only hints at what the band have in store. The new song is another example of the their prowess, its reverb-heavy drums and the echoing vocals of Mia Bøe the defining elements of a track which indicates a further growth in the band's atmospheric sound.
Lola Colt - 'I Get High if You Get High'
The last of my hghlighted tracks for this week sits in stark contrast to the other two. London-based sextet Lola Colt put forth a much darker proposition on their debut single; 'I Get High if You Get High' is due for release through the Too Pure Singles Club on July 8th (they're having a strong year, might I add), and walks the line between bruising psych and intoxicating fuzz-pop with ease. Led by the commanding presence and powerful vocals of a Dane known only as Gun, the band's powerful sound is presented as something visceral, and their new song is certainly something of a white-knuckle ride. There's a sense of something ominous hanging over everything, and you'll have plenty of time to acquaint yourself with their foreboding sound, as there's an album pencilled in for early next year.

Is it just me, or was the Christmas period a blur? I mean, all the Christmassy stuff happened, and then we had New Year's, but looking back now it seems like it was pretty much all gone in a flash. As you've probably figured out, the world didn't end on December 21st, which is good, because I wasn't able to inform you that New Music Friday itself, as well as the 405, went on a Christmas break. Hello again, and welcome to another edition of New Music Friday. For me, this week has been about victories. Some of them were small ones, and that's no bad thing; like almost anyone, I'll take what I can get. There were a couple of bigger ones, too: equal marriage rights took a huge step forward in the States - such a thing has given hope to people everywhere. It's been a momentous week in many respects, and the same can certainly be said of the world of music. [read more]
Hi again, and welcome to another round of New Music Friday, featuring music so good you'd risk braving Arctic conditions just to listen to it... or even just trudge through several feet of snow. I have largely escaped the perilous precipitation that the UK has had to deal with recently - I say 'largely' because it snowed a bit (!) here during the week, and it was the horribly slushy kind of snow that was impossible to do anything with, and left me with a face like this: :(. Hello again, and welcome to the final April edition of New Music Friday. You may have noticed in recent days that there appears to be some strange object in the sky that has been shining and helping to increase temperatures. Do not be alarmed: this strange phenomenon, rarely seen in these parts so far this year, is called 'the sun'. [read more]
