Top 5 Songs Of The Week: November 15th 2013

by Oliver Primus (Google+), 15 November 2013

We're only a third of the way through November, but it already feels like people are looking for a shortcut to that lovely two-week window when the "industry" shuts down. Which is weird because this week's selection is an absolute knockout. It's as if artists don't care about perfect timing for the 'End of Year' season! What's going on!?

While Farhot's declaration of "fuck the money" doesn't serve me too well when introducing a bunch of songs that we think you should be spinning, it's the sort of line that will wash over you, drowning all other thoughts in its path. So yeah, "fuck the money" and listen to these songs (oh damn, it actually worked really well.)

  • Artist: Mokadem
  • Track Name: 'Pretend Ur Mine'
  • Location: UK
  • Link: Facebook
  • Author: Oliver Primus

The video for 'Pretend Ur Mine' is essentially a combination of every single party I've ever wanted to attend, but was never invited to. It also accurately portrays the dream-like, montage feel of the track itself, which manages to sound better with every listen. I also like watching people eat grapes in a bath, but who doesn't, right?

  • Artist: Saol Álainn
  • Track Name: 'Nostroke'
  • Location: Los Angeles
  • Link: Official Site
  • Author: Matt Korman

Mixed with jarring contrasts of muddled house beats, off-kilter production, and semi-sweet vocal flows is the impossibly engrossing 'Nostroke' from Saol Álainn. The name is relatively new, but if his effort on 'Nostroke' comes on as strong through the rest of his future work, then Saol Álainn could have an intensely bright future ahead.

  • Artist: GEMS
  • Track Name: 'Ephemera'
  • Location: Washington DC
  • Link: Facebook
  • Author: Matt Korman

The dynamic release, brimming with shiny post-punk polish and bedroom-pop sweet stings, precedes the band's November 14th show in their hometown's U Street Music Hall. The band will be off for a while thereafter with their next show scheduled for December 5th at the Glasslands in Brooklyn.

  • Artist: Angel Olsen
  • Track Name: 'Forgiven/Forgotten'
  • Location: U.S.
  • Link: Facebook
  • Author: Oliver Primus

I could be wrong, but do Jagjaguwar have a really strong track record when it comes to Q1 releases? If my memory serves my well, which it probably doesn't (I should probably just google this), they did the same thing with Sharon Van Etten? Either way, Angel Olsen's forthcoming album, Burn Your Fire For No Witness, is 100% an essential release, and we've only heard one track ('Forgiven/Forgotten'). Get this two-minute gem on now.

  • Artist: Farhot
  • Track Name: 'Fuck The Money'
  • Location: Germany
  • Link: Facebook
  • Author: Chris Lockie

You have to love a track that punches you in the face and then kisses it better. German producer Farhot's new and quite excellent track 'Fuck The Money' drops dirty a dirty bassline and sinister guitars beneath a childlike repetition of three simple words that we all agree with, while forever chasing the damn stuff.

Kasabian, Jake Bugg, Ed Sheeran and Jack White on one bill? Pinch us, we must be dreaming! No, seriously, pinch us. Wake us up from this nightmare of beige-ass disappointment, doltish lad-rock and supreme snivelling shit-spouters. With doozies like these Top 5 Tracks, we're on our knees praying for the likes of Street Joy, Ibn Inglor, Icona Pop, Jacopo Wun and Wolf Alice to grace Glasto's stages(well, silver lining, at least someone upstairs has heard our calls about the latter). "I heard this guy going around talking about how he was this big rap producer, and he was just going around and boasting and bragging. And in one of those bragging sessions, I heard him just tell somebody, 'Hey, hey -- why don't you try making four beats a day for two summers?' What a dangerously specific challenge that is."
