Lapalux - Some Other Time [EP]

Lapalux - Some Other Time [EP]

by , 09 October 2012

Wizard of textural beats Stuart Howard, aka Lapalux, marks his second release for Flying Lotus' Brainfeeder label with his new EP Some Other time.

The Essex based beatsmith, who has been hailed as one of the most original and innovative producers of recent years fuses his brand of contemporary electronica with a splash of R&B and soul, which has caught the ears of electronic veterans, Diplo, Flying Lotus, Skream, Benji B and Huw Stevens, who are all fans of his swooning ambience. Howard's previous releases include the Many Faces Out of Focus EP which was brought out through the Pictures Music label in early 2011, and the When Your Gone EP, which was the first record from a British artist to be released on Flying Lotus' Californian label, Brainfeeder. Lapalux has also been filling his time as a high demand remix artist, reinventing tracks from the likes of Lianne La Havas, Crystal Fighters, Bonobo, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, AlunaGeorge and Speech Debelle. Some Other Time is the next instalment in Howard's impressive resume of material which exhibits his growth and maturity in production and influence.

The EP kicks off with 'Quartz', a beat founded in a chopped up music box refrain which is layered with xylophone melodies and scattered vocals and sets the ambient mood for the rest of Some Other Time. 'Jaw Jackin'' follows with a schizophrenic percussion line that is textured underneath a fizzling haze of clicks and staggered synths. 'Forgetting and Leaning Again', the first single release from the EP, shows the R&B influence in Lapalux's music and features the velvet sounds of Kerry Leatham's vocals, which blend perfectly with Howards style of contemporary electronic. 'Strangling You With The Chord' starts fuzzing with static and highlighted by stabs of synth it evolves into a space age post-dubstep track. Finishing the EP is 'Close Call/Chop Cuts', which weaves a tapestry of electronic soul jazz and establishes a sound that is a whole level above his peers.

Some Other Time joins Branfeeder's unstoppable release schedule as the first British release to drop from the label, it shows growth and great potential for the already coveted producer who has got the attention of critics and peers alike and is cementing his position as one of the most original, innovative and exceptional producers in contemporary electronic music.

25-year-old producer Stuart Howard, aka Lapalux, has managed to build quite the expectant fan base ahead of the release of his debut album Nostalchic. It's little wonder, either; not for nothing does Brainfeeder label boss Flying Lotus decide to take a personal interest in a young artists' work, and nor do remixes for the likes of Bonobo and Lianne La Havas start presenting themselves unless a producer is really starting to catch the eye. Lapalux is in demand. Stuart Howard, who files behind the name, already got people listening with 2011’s Many Faces Out of Focus and his new When You’re Gone EP impresses for much the same reasons: it's emotional, it's interesting, and it's dynamic. [read more]
