[Updated] Death Grips vs. Epic Records: Epic drop the band
Update: Epic have released the following statement:
Epic Records is a music first company that breaks new artists. That is our mission and our mandate. Unfortunately, when marketing and publicity stunts trump the actual music, we must remind ourselves of our core values. To that end, effective immediately, we are working to dissolve our relationship with Death Grips. We wish them well.
Interesting, but quite predictable.
The ongoing saga that is the war between Death Grips and Epic Records has taken an unforeseen and vaguely surreal turn, with the band now speaking to Pitchfork and saying that they 'got sick of hearing about this marketing shit, annoying' and also posting confidential emails from the label to their Facebook page.
This of course is over the fact that the band released their newest LP NO LOVE DEEP WEB for free on the internet without getting the green light from the record label. Although I am a fan of the band, I have to say that this whole situation seems more than a bit ridiculous. It's a great LP and if they could have just sent the record to Epic, I'm sure it would have been released quite quickly and without any changes. After all, didn't Epic release their fantastic LP The Money Store without any apparent hitches?
Time will only tell but perhaps this will be the end of the bickering from both sides. You can view the emails over at their Facebook page.
Continuing their stint of cancelling shows, Death Grips have said that they'll be canceling their upcoming fall tour - that wasn't even announced yet. This includes their stop at the Fun Fun Fun fest in November. [read more]
