The 405 Artist Picks // Golden Glow

by The 405 (Google+), 31 May 2011

My name is Pierre Hall. I am a 27 year old songwriter based in Manchester. Music is the most important thing in my life and has been for as long as I can remember. Life is testing, but I feel like I’m doing the best that I can.

Reading:I recently read, on the recommendation of a literary friend ‘Therese Raquin’ by Emile Zola. It’s a beautiful book and I would recommend it to anyone. Its set in Paris and I suppose is about the power of lust, which is something that really interests me and how these simple urges we cannot prevent ourselves from having, can have devastating consequences, despite us being aware of the consequences. I like to read about stuff like this, which is completely universal across all creeds and cultures. Human nature never fails to surprise you.

Listening:Beach Fossils ‘What a Pleasure EP’ I loved the first album, which was really lo-fi, but he’s really stepped it up on this EP, with the songwriting and production. It’s a lot more reminiscent of his Captured-Tracks labelmate, Wild Nothing (who actually appears on one of the tracks). The songs are poppy without being too cliché. And the space he gives between the instruments is just perfect. It makes everything breathe almost, and really gets inside of you. I love it.

Watching: Seinfield: Various

I broke my leg a year and a half ago and couldn’t walk for almost 6 months. Aside from recording the album, i also watched every single episode of Seinfield. I’m a massive Curb Your Enthusiasm fan – so wanted to see where it all came from. It's genius. Curb is like one minute of Seinfeld stretched over a whole Episode. I was surprised to see it was so popular in the U.S. Not because it’s not good, but just because its quick, and requires quite a lot of thinking. It isn’t as easy going as say ‘Friends’. But I’m glad it got the recognition it deserved. George is my hero. And Julia Louis-Dreyfus gets hotter as the series progress. She has that classic 80s chick thing going.

Eating: I’m half Mauritian – so am trying to embrace my roots. My Mauritian-style chicken curry is coming on leaps and bounds at the moment. However my girlfriend is vegetarian, so i am my only critique. I could be bias. You’ll have to take my word for it.

Promo: My (Golden Glow) album comes out on 21st June on Mush Records (CD/digital) and Bleeding Gold Records (vinyl). It’s called Tender Is the Night, (after the F. Scott Fitzgerald book.) Buy it! That is all.
