Toronto-based Abel Tesfaye started creating tracks under The Weeknd (well co-creating with Jeremy Rose initially) in 2010 - hey we all remember that week when his House of Balloons free mixtape ripped through the Internet right?

Two more free albums followed featuring more of the same real seedy shit, sort of fame/sex obsessed and getting high bravado; the whole twisted R&B package reeked of drugs and general opprobrious behaviour. These days he's kind of a superstar embarking on his first world tour, selling out Electric Ballroom four nights running - or as he call it an "intimate show" acting as a precursor to future arena dates. Lyrics such as "Bring your body baby, I could bring you fame" are no longer the character-driven stories that they once were, this outer-stratosphere life is in the palm of his hands. Image becoming a reality? Who knows when the line has always been blurred anyway.

We caught the first of the four nights at Electric Ballroom in Camden with the wild audience taking the lyrics of almost-EDM-tinged 'High For This' quite literally judging by the smell, aka the smell of Otto's jacket. And it really was wild, the kind of teenage screaming normally reserved for viral goat videos. Check out our photos of the night below.

Unless you've managed to keep your distance from the hormonal hotbed that is Tumblr, part of The Weeknd's (or Abel Tesfaye) emergent digital supremacy was down to that micro-blogging site (despite the partial truth that Drake worked as his fellow Candadian's semi-conspitorial A&R). [read more]

Strap in, this is gonna be a long'un. Few artists made as much of an impression in 2011 as The Weeknd. The enigmatic, initially anonymous R&B project of 22-year-old Toronto native Abel Tesfaye. Heralded as on of the saviours of R&B alongside the likes of Frank Ocean, The Weeknd combined Tesfaye's arrestingly pure vocals with a dense, dark production and instrumentation. [read more]
