Richard Kern, one of the most prominent and controversial photographic voices of the East Village underground in the '80s, is showing previously unreleased polaroids in a new exhibition titled Polarized, which opens on September 9th at New York’s Fortnight Institute.

Generally associated with the darker aspects of the human condition such as sex and violence, Kern became known for bending the rules of what is beautiful and acceptable; his models, usually young, naked, and with little to no make-up on, play with the limits of perversion and decadence, always establishing a direct relationship with the observer.

Check out some of the photos below, and be sure to pay the exhibit a visit if you're in the Big Apple.
