Warner Bros. feels Jared Leto's take on the Joker – featured in 2016’s Suicide Squad – maybe just the ticket to build that title into a movie franchise of its own.

Sources tell Variety that Leto is set to star in and executive produce the, as of now, untitled project. If it is successful, we will likely see more films in the Suicide Squad vein, with a Margot Robbie-led Harley Quinn spin-off directed by Cathy Yan already in the works.

Suicide Squad itself was, in essence, almost universally panned by critics and fans alike – it only sports a 27% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Fans viewed Leto's Joker as almost a "glorified cameo" in the film. Still, the Academy Award-winner Leto said after Suicide's release in 2016 that he really wanted to expand on the character in future projects in a "more substantive" way – even if that meant doing it without a starring role.
