Robert DeNiro is reportedly in talks to join Todd Phillips' untitled Joker origin movie already starring Joaquin Phoenix. This film's neo-noir flavor (as a crime film) is what reportedly attracted DeNiro to it as fundamentally familiar territory for the actor.

Variety is also reporting that DeNiro would likely be playing a talk show host who has a huge hand in driving Phoenix's character to madness and the Joker persona.

These sources also said that the script has ties to DeNiro's 1982 film with Jerry Lewis, Martin Scorsese's The King of Comedy. In it, DeNiro played an aspiring comic who takes to stalking his idol (played by Lewis) who is a privacy-hungry talk show host.

Sources are also stressing that this film has nothing to do with Jared Leto as the Joker in the DC Universe. For all intents and purposes, the two projects are basically independent.
