Having been in the works for over five years now, the Freddie Mercury biopic finally has filming dates set. Due to start filming in June, Ben Whishaw is said to be the main contender to play the late Queen frontman. Anthony McCarton, screenwriter of The Theory of Everything is reportedly hired to rewrite the script originally penned by Peter Morgan (The Queen, Frost/Nixon).

The Tracking Board reports Scrotal Recall's Johnny Flynn is set to play Roger Taylor with Gemma Arterton also attached to play alongside Wishaw as Mercury's former girlfriend Mary Austin.

Sacha Baron Cohen was set to star as Mercury for this biopic up until July 2013, at which time he experienced "creative differences" with Brian May and Roger Taylor. Both are executive producers on the project. Director Dexter Fletcher, known for Sunshine on Leith and Wild Bill, was also attached to the project but left in March 2014. A new director is yet to be announced.
