Fans of Lord of the Rings rejoice! It's official: Amazon has announced a multi-season commitment to a television show based on the Tolkien novels after acquiring global rights to the saga on that platform.

The LOTR television saga will be produced in-house at Amazon Studios, working closely with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, Harpercollins Publishing, and Warner Brother's New Line Cinema.

It’s story arc will focus on Middle Earth before Tolkien's The Fellowship of the Ring, and even includes a unspecified spin-off series.

This news comes on the heels of a $80 million courtroom battle between Warner Bros. and the Tolkien Estate over profits, and basically everyone trying to replicate the hit that Game of Thrones became for HBO.

Stay tuned to The 405 for more on this as we hear it.
