Star of the original Star Wars trilogy Mark Hamill has revealed that he has been paid a large amount of money to keep a big The Force Awakens secret about his character Luke Skywalker.

Having been absent from all trailers, posters and TV spots, fans have been suspicious of what this means for the Christmas release blockbuster, and specifically what has become of Luke in the 30 years between Episode VI and VII.

"I have something coming out where there's an amount of money that if it leaks, because of me, I don't get that payment" Hamill said to PC Gamer. "I'm good about keeping secrets, I'm proud of the fact that I knew a year and a half before anybody else that he was actually dad Vader." The Star Wars actor added: "Now it's happening all over again. I'm not even authorised to tell you I'm in Episode VII, it's all secret."

There have been many theories circulating the Star Wars fanbase about Luke's involvement in Episode VII, ranging from Luke being dead to secretly being the new trilogy's villain Kylo Ren. All will be revealed next month.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens in theatres 17 December in the UK and 18 December in the US.
