Many people may not recall that indeed LA Lakers' legend Kobe Bryant does have an Oscar for he and Glen Keane’s animated short Dear Basketball.

When people who are not Academy members win an Oscar like this, the Academy will often ballot on whether to extend them the invite for organization membership. The Academy's Short Film and Feature Animation branch did this with Bryant and actually voted in the affirmative to let him in, yet Variety is reporting that the Academy’s governors have overruled the decision, saying that Bryant has not shown that he wishes to amass greater experience in the film space.

This comes after the #OscarssoWhite controversy in 2016 when the Academy was accused of lowering its standards to let more people in. 17,000 also signed a petition demanding Bryant be stripped of his Oscar because of his 2003 sexual assault case too, so #TimesUp and #MeToo may have also factored in to the board of governor's rationale – we do not know as the Academy has not yet issued a comment.
