R. Lee Ermey, best known as Gunnery Sgt. Hartman, the drill sergeant in Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket and for his role in David Fincher's Se7en, passed away Sunday April 15 at 74.

The news was announced via Ermey's official Twitter account by his long-time manager Bill Rogin.

Ermey didn't just play a military man on film – to terrifyingly good effect in Kubrick's film especially, a role which got him a nomination for a Golden Globe – he was one in real life, having served as a U.S. Marine Corps staff sergeant and honorary gunnery sergeant. "Gunny" as he was affectionately known, served 2 tours in Okinawa, Japan, and 14 months in Vietnam.

Rest in peace and Semper Fi Gunny. Enjoy Ermey's most iconic scene from Full Metal Jacket below.
