Luc Besson, the director behind The Fifth Element, Leon: The Professional, Le Femme Nikita, and 2014's Lucy, has announced the initial cast for his upcoming 2017 project Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, based on the French comic Empire of a Thousand Planets from writer Pierre Christin and artist Jean-Claude Mézières.

Actor Dane DeHaan will play the lead role of Valerian alongside Cara Delevigne, portraying Laureline. The two will also be cast alongside Rihanna, marking the project as her third official film. Originally published in the late '60s, the comic takes place in the 28th century, focusing heavily on the themes of time. Delevigne's character Laureline is originally from 11th century France while Valerian is from the current era, born in the future Earth capitol of Galaxity in the fictitious future.

Besson will also be writing the screenplay for the film, which is set to debut July 21st of 2017. No word yet on when production for the film will officially begin.
