Shane Black's The Predator was just days away from having its final cut locked in when an urgent message came in - "Delete the scene featuring Steven Wilder Striegel."

To be clear, the 47-year-old Striegel did not have a big part in his friend Shane Black's movie, only a 3 page scene with lead actress Olivia Munn. Munn, however, found out that Striegel plead guilty in 2010 to felony charges of trying to lure a 14-year-old female into a sexual relationship online – charges ("risk of injury to a child" and "enticing a minor by computer") he subsequently served 6 months in jail for.

Munn took her findings to Fox who acted quickly – making the decision to ax his scene on August 15. A Fox executive told the LA Times, "Our studio was not aware of Mr. Striegel's background when he was hired" because of legal limitations on running background checks on actors.

Black had known however. When Striegel was arrested in 2009 on the charges, he and Black had known each other for 5 years. Black said in a statement to the Times that he "personally chose to help a friend". Black went on, "I can understand others might disapprove, as his conviction was on a sensitive charge and not to be taken lightly," saying he believed Striegel was "caught up in a bad situation versus something lecherous."

Black elaborated in a separate statement after the Times article hit the press – saying the piece informed him of new facts about Striegel's conviction. "Having read this morning's news reports, it has sadly become clear to me that I was misled by a friend I really wanted to believe was telling me the truth when he described the circumstances of his conviction," Black's new statement reads.

The new statement goes on, "I believe strongly in giving people second chances – but sometimes you discover that chance is not as warranted as you may have hoped."

"After learning more about the affidavit, transcripts and additional details surrounding Steve Striegel's sentence, I am deeply disappointed in myself... I apologize to all of those, past and present, I've let down by having Steve around them without giving them a voice in the decision."

After Black's original statement, Munn is quoted as saying that she found it "both surprising and unsettling that Shane Black, our director, did not share this information to the cast, crew, or Fox Studios prior to, during, or after production."

Munn went on to credit Fox for acting swiftly, "I am relieved that when Fox finally did receive the information, the studio took appropriate action by deleting the scene featuring Wilder prior to release of the film."

The Predator hits theaters 13 September in the UK and September 14 in the U.S.
