Mary Magdalene looks to be a new kind of epic biblical epic from Lion director Garth Davis. He is joined by cinematographer Greig Fraser who also worked on the DGA award-winning Lion.

The story focuses on its eponymous heroine (played by Rooney Mara) and her time with Jesus (played by Joaquin Phoenix, joining Willem Dafoe and Jim Caviezel in that exclusive club of silver-screen Christs). This is a ground-breaking thing in a genre marked by male-centered stories, with Noah and Moses in The Ten Commandments as examples.

Chiwetel Ejiofor and Tahar Rahim round out who we know so far of the supporting cast. Helen Edmundson (An Inspector Calls) and Philippa Goslett (How to Talk to Girls at Parties) are credited as writers.

Catch Mary Magdalene in theaters March 30th of next year, and enjoy the trailer below.
