Most of us know him from the idea and science of memeticsfirst appearing in Richard Dawkins' 1976 book “The Selfish Gene”. A "meme" is essentially a concept or idea that transmits through a culture, infects it, and "goes viral" much like an actual biological agent. Memes even compete, reproduce, and evolve – just like its biological analog.

Memetics is essentially the genesis of Slenderman, a tall imposing figure with tentacles that – the original story goes – lives in the woods and abducts children. Yet, even though we know Slenderman is a work of pure fictionfirst appearing on the website CreepyPasta in 2009 – he is much more to many, including two girls in Waukesha, WI who lived under a shared delusion that Slenderman wanted them to kill a third girl for him, that the two may live with him at his mansion in the woods.

Slenderman has been treated quite a bit in documentaries. But now – courtesy of Sony Pictures – he is getting a fictional feature film with the following synopsis:

"In a small town in Massachusetts, a group of friends perform a ritual in an attempt to debunk the lore of Slender Man. When one of them goes mysteriously missing, they begin to suspect that she is, in fact, HIS latest victim".

Slender Man is directed by Sylvain White and stars Joey King, Julia Goldani-Telles, Jaz Sinclair, Annalise Basso, and Javier Botet.

Slender Man is slated for an Aug. 10 release date. Enjoy both trailers below.
