Following yesterday's reports that Beyoncé is in the midst of writing her first screenplay, based on the life of Saartjie Baartman, the South African woman enslaved in a Victorian freak show, one South African chief has some harsh words for Queen Bey. Jean Burgess, the chief of the Ghonaqua First Peoples slammed the singer to South Africa News 24, stating that Beyoncé, "lacks the basic human dignity to be worthy of writing Sarah's story, let alone playing the part."

"I can only see arrogance in her attempt to tell a story that is not hers to tell," he stated. Baartman, who was exploited by Europeans and forced on display for her large behind, has since become a symbol of the colonialist objectification of women of colour, drawing support from some and questions from others regarding Beyoncé's ability to do the story justice.
