As the dwindling, slow movie slog that marks the end of summer draws to its dreary close, slowly but surely next season's crop of potential Oscar-favorites begin to emerge. The newest of which comes from celebrated director Denis Villenueve (Sicario, Prisoners) with his modest-budget science fiction drama Arrival, which just debuted its first trailer.

Based off the Ted Chiang short story Story Of Your Life, Arrival stars Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, and Forest Whitaker. The full trailer debuts next week so we'll be able to get a bigger sense of the visual story soon, but for now Paramount offers this synopsis of the upcoming film:

"When mysterious spacecraft touch down across the globe, an elite team - lead by expert linguist Louise Banks (Adams) - are brought together to investigate. As mankind teeters on the verge of global war, Banks and the team race against time for answers – and to find them, she will take a chance that could threaten her life, and quite possibly humanity."

Watch the first trailer below. Arrival debuts in U.S. theaters November 11th.
