"Pain is temporary, but a film is forever," The Revenant director Alejandro Inarritu said while collecting his awards for his latest motion picture, that picked up the top prizes for best drama, best director and best actor during the 73rd edition of the Golden Globes, which aired live on Sunday night.

With a predictably offensive and probably already obliterated opening monologue from fourth-time host Ricky Gervais, the three-hour award show kicked off when Gervais labelled the crowd as a bunch of "pill-popping sexual deviant scum." But the room was still brimming with glitter and glam, as the night unveiled its big winners.

While Matt Damon's astronaut stranded on Mars in The Martian won the comedy acting award, Leonard DiCaprio won best actor in a drama for his lead role as the fur trapper seeking revenge in The Revenant.
