Vince Vaughn is back in a dramatic role in Brawl in Cell Block 99, as a former boxer forced to courier narcotics for an old acquaintance after losing his job as a mechanic and almost losing his marriage.

The new job as a drug courier seems to improve his situation — until he gets into a gun fight with police and lands in prison, where he is forced to commit unspeakable acts of violence to survive.

It is this last plot point that made me think of this film as one perhaps in the vein of Jules Dassin's 1947 prison classic Brute Force — starring Burt Lancaster — sans the prison rebellion. Vaughn is a big guy, a towering presence, and despite his typical comic typecasting, I think he could play this part well.
