Among the litany of takes on the musical industry as a whole, few recent novels found such an inventive, profound method of doing so more than John Nivens' 2008 book Kill Your Friends.

The novel, now adapted to film starring everyone's favorite mega-star Nicholas Hoult as the book's main figure Steven Stelfox, is a deft look at the darker side of the music industry - specifically the peak of Britpop. Stelfox, a 27-year-old A&R rep, is going as far as he can to maintain his string of success even as the niche around him begins to collapse.

Adapted by director Owen Harris, Kill Your Friends also stars Craig Roberts, Rosanna Arquette, Tim Riley and James Corden. It debuts in North America in the City to City section for the Toronto Film Festival and has a new trailer, below.
