Sometimes a band is better defined not by genre or by comparison but by their story. We Are Augustines are a band born of real loss and heartbreak, formed when guitarist and vocalist Billy McCarthy and bassist Eric Sanderson’s former band Pela broke up after McCarthy’s brother, James, committed suicide.

McCarthy and Sanderson eventually decided the material written for Pela could not be wasted and recruited drummer Rob Allen, resulting in We Are Augustines debut record Rise Ye Sunken Ships.

Even without the context, the album (available from the 5th of March in the UK) is a stirring, powerful thing. Their stories of troubled life and personal tragedy are turned into something ultimately uplifting.

Single 'Book of James' is a perfect example, and you can see it here for yourself in a stripped down acoustic take.
