I never thought I'd see the day when a football game was be powered by an engine that was designed around a stealth action game.

Konami Digital Entertainment released details yesterday that PES 2014 will be powered by the much-coveted FOX engine that was debuted earlier this year, showing off some shiny graphics for the upcoming Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.

There are also a couple of key additions to the new PES title that will include:

  • *TrueBall Tech: Basically this is a massive upgrade to player animations on the pitch allowing gamers to read their opponents body motions and angle their own player's body to determine how they will pass the ball and dribble it on the pitch – A massive physics upgrade that will bring a realistic edge getting as close to the real sport itself.
  • *Motion Animation Stability System (M.A.S.S.): This allows players' interaction with each other to be more individualistic and realistic – Instead of playing set animation when players attack each other, a tackle will be determined on the player’s body physics in that situation. So football players can now stumble if clipped, barge others off the ball and use their stature to block players from possession.
  • *Heart: No, it’s not a power to summon Captain Planet, instead this new feature creates a mental attribute individual to each team member across the entire team that will affect your game performance depending on the conditioning of your team and their overall play style.

There will also be a PES ID that has added many star football players with their unique traits and play style along with running animations to make them instantly recognizable. There's also a Team Play tactic that can be assigned to players on the pitch to attack, defend or exploit holes on midfield, etc.

I’ll admit that I’m not a big football fan, but after reading this, I can't deny how amazing tech like the FOX engine has the potential to improve the realism of a pretty tactically complex sports game.

There are still some announcements to be made about the online features that will supposedly bring a 'quantum leap from what football fans have been used to.' For now, all we really know is PES 2014 is slated for release in 2013 on the PS3, PC, Xbox 360 and PSP.
