Drumroll please: the winner of this year's Pioneer Award at the 2014 AIM Independent Music Awards is...Martin Mills, founder of the legendary Beggars Group!

Mills set up the Beggars Banquet back in 1974, beginning as just a few record shops in London before expanding to its own record label that helped launch the careers of Bauhaus, The Cult, Gary Numan, The Charlatans, and more. From its humble beginnings its grown into a collective of successful labels that all operate from London. You probably know them: 4AD, Rough Trade, XL Recordings, and Young Turks.

He's long been considered one of the leading voices in independent music and speaking of the ward, he said "I’m delighted and moved to receive this honour from my peers; nothing can mean more than that." Chairman of AIM, Alison Wenham, was thrilled that he's receiving the award as well, saying “I'm so glad the judges have chosen Martin to receive this year's Pioneer Award. Martin is one of the music industry's great visionaries, having built an exceptional company around finding and nurturing true talent. Martin has done more than anyone in the world to support and strengthen the independent sector globally through his work with AIM, WIN, Merlin and Impala, and I look forward to celebrating his achievements in September."

The AIM Independent Music Awards will be held on 2nd September at The Brewery in Clerkenwell. You can pick up tickets here.
