Amidst all the bullshit and negativity of modern life, sometimes you just need to stick a happy record on, right? You know, just sit back and listen to a cheery song. And so, our offering to you today, reader, is the brand new Alex Winston single. It’s a song about the uncertainty and excitement of new love and it’s certainly a merrymaker.

“As I get older, my lyrics have turned more personal. Happiness is definitely not an emotion I’m used to writing about, but I think it’s important to celebrate the good things every once in a while”, Winston tells The 405, and that’s certainly a sentiment we can get behind.

Following her superb EP with Max Hershenow (a.k.a Alex Maax) as Post Precious and also ‘Tourist’, last year’s clever little mid-tempo rocker, Winston worked on ‘Miss U 1000000’ with Ben from The Knocks and it’s out on The Knocks’ own label, Heavy Roc.

Here Winston tells The 405 a few things you should know about this summer charmer.

If I had to summarise ‘Miss U 1000000’ in one sentence, it would be…

A great song to buy on iTunes.

The initial idea for the song came to me as…

Something my boyfriend tells me – “miss you 1000000”. We are long distance, so we are constantly in a perpetual state of missing each other. He thinks he’s getting 5% of the song, but he isn’t…

I wrote and worked on the track with Ben Ruttner as…

He is a very good friend of mine. In fact, I just dropped him off at the airport a couple hours ago. He and I have worked together a lot throughout the years. We come from different backgrounds sonically, so I think we really push each other. It's always nice to work with someone who really knows you and Ben is that person for me.

The sample on ‘Miss U 1000000’ is…

The Mighty Indiana Travelers - 'Since My Soul's Been Saved'.

I was drawn to this particular sample because…

The lyric “Tell Me How You Feel” really spoke to me. I’ve actually never used a sample in a song before but it kind of summarises the message I wanted to capture in the song.

My other favourite lyric on the song is…

“I thought that I was so tough, buying you a drink in Canada / but we forgot the soda, drove the wrong way and the cops showed up”. True story!

The best part of working on ‘Miss U 1000000’ was…

How I was feeling when I wrote it. The song just makes me happy. It's hopeful but uncertain…

I chose the car image for the single artwork because…

It's badass!

I knew the track was finished when…

Ben said it was done. I’m bad at drawing the line but I’m slowly learning less is more [laughs].

After ‘Miss U 1000000’ my plan is…

To release more music consistently over the next year. Hopefully going on tour this fall as well. I’m not sure that I want to release a full-length album at this point. I’m having a lot of fun with singles. There is something really freeing just putting standalone tracks out into the world.

‘Miss U 1000000’ is out now on Heavy Roc.
