CHAI is a Japanese band formed of four young females who dare to flirt with expectations and then twist them up in amusing and catchy ways. Their main method of attack is to toy with the stereotypical idea of "cuteness", or Kawaii as it is in Japan, and turning it into something acerbic and challenging. Their debut album PINK will be coming out in the UK through Heavenly on October 12th, and they've this week unleashed the mission statement single 'N.E.O.'.

On the message of 'N.E.O.' they say: “Everyone, if we could be exactly who we are, that would be great right? Worrying is normal you know? Complexes are individuality. Complexes are art. Kawaii is a never-ending journey! This is “N.E.O. Kawaii”!!!!! Enjoy.”

The enthusiasm of that quote is directly translated into CHAI's slashing and thrusting pop-punk style, where the cuteness of their lyrics suddenly takes on a more unpredictably wild attitude. "You are so cute! Nice Face! Oh Yeah!” they chant in the emphatic chorus, before sidewinding through Japanese verses where they ask the questions "Isn’t being “boring” weird? Isn’t having the same face, weird?" and you can picture them smiling with sheer glee at the beguiling cheekiness of the whole thing as they rattle through 'N.E.O.'. Take a listen below.
