William The Conqueror seems hellbent on blurring the lines between genres. While the headline of this very piece dubs them an "Americana" act, they could also easily be labeled as "country" or "folk" or even "grunge" or just straight-forward "rock." But whatever you want to call William The Conqueror does not matter. All that matters is that this group is good. Damn good. And with their debut album, Proud Disturber Of The Peace, on its way on August 4 through the distinguished label Loose (home of Sturgill Simpson, among others), The 405 is proud to be sharing the band's debut single 'In My Dreams.'

'In My Dreams' straights with a loose, but moody riff lined with a stomping beat, only further accentuated by a trademark country blues guitar line. The lyrics reflects the music beautifully, offering a bluesy meditation on a life gone awry but not lost just yet.

"It's about being disappointed but facing it with defiance," says multi-instrumentalist Ruarri Joseph. "It's about wanting to be judged on the whole story but knowing that the whole story is untellable so saying, 'Fuck it,' and carrying on trying anyway. Musically it's in honour of our younger selves and that impulse to want to play everything loud and fast, bolting out of the gates and not letting up."

Harry Harding and Naomi Holmes, the two other multi-instrumentalists who round out the group, agreed with Joseph's take.

"Recording it was like an endurance test; going balls to the wall every take trying to find an extra gear when you're already at your limit," says Harding. "You've got no choice but to commit, which relates to the song too I guess."

"It's liberating to play something that relentlessly snowballs, no lulls or time for conscious thought," adds Holmes. "It's all about the release for me, trying to get lost in it, which is fun."

William The Conqueror will release their debut album Proud Disturber Of The Peace via Loose on August 4. You can catch them live tonight supporting The Americans at the Sebright Arms and at The Great Escape on Friday, May 19 (5:20pm @ The Mesmerist).
