Canadian synth-pop kween Allie X released her e(X)quisite debut EP titled CollXtion roughly this time last year, having made the Internet shake a little bit with the release of the very, well, catchy track 'Catch' some months before (aided by a Twitter bump from that little known act Katy Perry).

Live shows have been a rare treat since her 2014 debut - especially for UK-based fans - but last night Allie X performed live on these soils for the very first time at Birthdays. And you know what? It was totally worth the wait.

The primary detail to note from the evening in Dalston's premier basement was simply... that voice. The high notes, the gusto, the feeling, the whole package. Sometimes with pop music heavy on the electronics and production (like CollXtion is) vocals can of course be manipulated/showcased to sounds more impressive than they are. The equivalent of choosing a flattering Tinder profile pic, only for disappointment to occur irl. But oh no not here, a stunning, imposing delivery with an equally remarkable live rendition of those oh-so-difficult vocals cuts. Walking out from the gig every other conversation was centered around this fact.

The entirety of CollXtion got an airing with new track 'Old Habits Die Hard' sandwiched in-between - so inevitably the set was relatively short, but incredibly sweet. 'Catch', 'Prime', 'Hello' (the apt opener), it all worked live and left the crowd of (mostly) Twittergays™ feeling rather privileged to be in the presence of such a talent. 'Sanctuary' ended the eve that was also the highlight, with the soaring chorus threatening to launch Birthdays off into the big castle in the sky.

Always one for putting a good deal of thought into her work - I mean what do you expect when you list humans such as Mariah Carey, Mark Mothersbaugh, Tom Petty, and Haruki Murakami as influences - Allie X continues the somewhat conceptual nature of her EPs, with CollXtion II to be released this spring ("moving the plot forward" in terms of the 'X' series, as she describes). Last night's show made anticipation levels reach even further giddy stratospheres.
