Zach Condon's long-running musical project Beirut has returned. After a few years without any news from them, Beirut has returned in dashing fashion with the announcement of a new album called Gallipoli, slated for release on February 1st through 4AD, and the release of the album's title track. The record was recorded in rural Southern Italy, and those surroundings seem to have had an effect on the sound of the record. Condon, discussing the title track, says:

“We stumbled into the medieval-fortressed island town of Gallipoli one night and followed a brass band procession fronted by priests carrying a statue of the town’s saint through the winding narrow streets behind what seemed like the entire town. The next day I wrote the song entirely in one sitting, pausing only to eat.”

The spirit of sudden inspiration is audible in 'Gallipoli', which also harks back to Beirut's earliest work in its communal rag-tag sing-along style - and possibly also because Condon has returned to the Farfisa organ which he used on those first two records. The brass sways like palms in the breeze, the percussion booms like a marching band and Condon's voice is as graceful and transportative as ever. Enfolded into the rich tapestry of 'Gallipoli' are sights, sounds and smells of this storied paradise full of humanity and culture.
