Sometimes, don’t you find yourself asking the big, overarching, important questions in life? Like, what is my favourite track to dance to at 2 in the morning? Or, what is the best ever cover of a Beatles track? Well, at The 405, we are a constant stream of such hard-hitting issues, debates and queries and, from the sounds of things, so are the bands and artists we love. So, as part of our quest to find out the answers to everything you ever need to know, we went out in search of the answers to the essential issues from the mouths of up and coming, established and brand new artists in our new feature, The Monthly Musical Matter!

So, with schmaltzy Valentines somewhat in mind, what is the sexiest song or album you’ve ever heard? Yup, this is the Booty Call Question…

La Shark

In my mind the sexiest song of all time is 'The Girl From Ipanema', in particular the version by Astrud Gilberto, featuring the sensual Stan Getz on sax. I may have chosen this song because we played a few shows in Brazil last year, which has undoubtedly given us all a rather unhealthy obsession for Brazilian women. Did you know Brazil is the only place in the world where Ass implants are more common than Boob jobs? NO JOKE.

The song was written by Brazilian Bossa Nova legend Antonio Carlos Jobim with Portuguese lyrics by Poet Vinicius de Moraes, later translated to English by Norman Gimbel who strangely also wrote the lyrics for 'Killing Me Soflty With His Song' of Fugees fame!

Everything about Astrud’s voices oozes with the sultry sex of a Brazilian summer, with the musical accompaniment tranquilly washing over you like the ebb and flow of the ocean. What makes it all the more astounding is that she wasn’t a trained singer and was only chosen to sing the role because she could speak English!

Citizens!

I'd have to go for Tina Turner doing 'Proud Mary' live. You can go for any version you like, although it might be best to avoid the Ike days. If you take a girl home and stick Ike Turner on the stereo she's likely to run for the hills.

Having sex to a live album is great. When the crowd cheer you get to imagine they are cheering you on…

Tina is the sexiest singer ever; Beyoncé stole all her moves. And could there be a better lovemaking refrain than: "And we're rolling, rolling, rolling on the river?" Just stick that song on repeat and you'll be good for hours.

'Babe You Turn Me On' by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds is good for loved up post-coital reflection.

Selebrities

So you want a woman to know how you really feel, and you want to be subtle and smooth AKA can't get the words out - you put on the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. The guitars, strings, and bass lines are the language of love. And plus it's almost practically an unofficial Bee Gees album. And that's all you need, The Brothers Gibb. Look at these lyrics : "More than a woman, More than a woman to me." Thats some real smooth, Dr. Love stuff right there. Every guy should personally address a thank you letter to them. Real dudes listen to the Bee Gees. -Jer Robert Paulin

William Bowerman of Brontide

When I heard I was doing the 'Booty Call Songs and Albums' piece, I worried that I didn't have any "sexy" songs in my record collection. I soon realised that I have the sexiest record collection of all time.

It became apparent that I was not going to be able to just choose one song. So I've made a 'William Bowerman's Top 5 Sexy RnB jams" list! They are as followed:

  • 1. Untitled - D'Angelo
  • 2. Bump n' Grind - R Kelly
  • 3.-Birthday Sex - Jeremih
  • 4. My Neck My Back - Khia
  • 5. Try Again – Timbaland

I have been waiting my whole life to make this list. Thank you 405.

Slow Club

Definitely ‘I Care 4 U’ by Aaliyah. This song is the sexiest song ever...That is if you're having a sexy enough time to block out the sound of Timbaland beat-boxing. Apart from that little shit bit, this song hits every spot. The descending chord progression in the chorus is a Rebecca Taylor must have. I love how sloppy and loose the drum pattern is in places (again please ignore the beat boxing).

Also, the idea of showing somebody care, and comfort: 'Can I talk to you? Comfort you?' is somehow sexier than being all about the banging (I love songs that just say that too, mind; see 'Panties to the Side' by The-Dream). The organ at the bed of it, the goosey-giving piano accents and her delivery make for a wibbly-tastic listen. She even manages to sing 'Hey sexy baby' TWICE and it still makes you quiver more than cringe. LADIES! BEWARE OF THIS SONG!

Little Racer

Elliot: It all depends on the mood, sometimes I turn on Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works to get things going, usually followed by Broken Social Scene's Feel Good Lost. They're both incredibly textural with little to no vocals. This helps prevent peoples faces cropping up in my mind during the love sesh.

Ish : I find myself listening to the sexiest songs at work, or in public shopping for groceries. Which makes for strange trips outdoors. But this last year highlights have been Keep Shelly in Athens . Or Promise Ring. Or Grimes - Vanessa. Its super sultry female vocals over the darkest rhythms. It makes you want to move but not dance…

Mike : I think the best booty call song is one that works with your natural mojo, I probably won't grind it out to Usher, but Thelonious Monk's 'Round About Midnight' has a nice blend of melancholy, danger, playfulness, and intensity which is, honestly, totally the way I bone.

And finally, a little trio of titillation from All The Saints...

The Beatles - 'Something in the Way' or My Bloody Valentines 'Sometimes' or H-Town 'Knockin the Boots'
