My Bloody Valentine's Kevin Shields recently stated in an interview with The Guardian that he felt Britpop was nothing more than a "government conspiracy."

"Britpop was massively pushed by the government. Someday it would be interesting to read all the MI5 files on Britpop. The wool was pulled right over everyone's eyes there," Shields says in Reddit forum Conspiracy, explaining that Noel Gallagher or Damon Albarn were vocal supporters of the Labour government.

Shields adds that in early Britpop days both Oasis and Blur members visited 10 Downing Street, and that he himself would've attended "on condition we could play a song."
