Musician turned TV star Carrie Brownstein, has been cast in the upcoming film Carol, the next project from Velvet Goldmine, Far From Heaven, and I'm Not There director Todd Haynes. It will mark the Sleater-Kinney guitarist and Portlandia co-creator's film debut, and she will star alongside Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Sarah Paulson, and Kyle Chandler.

Carol is a adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's 1952 novel The Prince of Salt, and follows the relationship of two lesbians living in New York during the same decade. Mara and Blanchett play the two leading roles, Mara's character, Therese, is a department store clerk who becomes obsessed with a customer, Blanchett's character. Brownstein will play Genevieve Cantrell, a woman who, according to The Hollywood Reporter, "has an encounter" with Therese.
