Date: 30 March 2009 Venue: Hope & Anchor, Islington Words: Mike Oldham Crikey, it's the first ever gig for this band of Math Rock persuasion and you wouldn't know it! The majority of this outfit are made up of ex From The Sky members, who incidentally played this same venue a year ago.  They have transformed from post rock dreamboats into a frenetic, fidgety math rock beast akin to a more stripped down Vessels. They play a 4 track set of energetic, progressive numbers, clocking in at 5-7 minutes long each. The 3 guitars of Daniel, Barry & James exchanging infectious riffs and guitar tapping a la This Town Needs Guns, all underlaid by Alan's fine bass work & John's tight drum skills. The Panda Conundrum is their rather epic nod back to their post rock beginnings.  Being quite into post rock myself i'll lay off any obvious comparisons, just give them a listen! I'd say they'll appeal to fans of Vessels, Minus The Bear, This Town Needs Guns, Scraps of Tape, Maserati. With the Schematics EP recently recorded in Wales, they are just about ready to roll. Hard to believe they are unsigned, surely someone will pick this one up soon eh? watch this space! Helsingfors play their 2nd gig at Water Rats 2nd of May, go and see for yourselves.
