After 17 years as the guitar player for Death Cab For Cutie, Chris Walla has announced that he'll be leaving the band. His final show with them will be at Rifflandia Festival in Victoria, British Columbia, on 13 September.

He posted a statement earlier this morning explaining his departure to The Stranger, saying "Short version: I’m leaving Death Cab for Cutie," adding "Longer version: I think I long for the unknown. It might be that simple."

He continued on to write "I will miss being a quarter of this band, and will support whatever course Death Cab for Cutie chooses from here. I am profoundly grateful to Ben, Nick, and Jason, for the experiences that define my adult life. Truly grateful, beyond words. Thank you."

It doesn't look like he'll stop making music, however - towards the end of his farewell letter, he says that "Moving forward, my plans are simply to continue making music, producing records, and erring on the side of benevolence and beauty whenever possible." "Darkness may find me, but I shall never choose it." Poetic.

The band recently finished recording their 8th album with Rich Costey, and it's said to be released in the first quarter of 2015. You can take a look at their final tour dates with Walla below.
