When you start looking into the lineage and history of West Coast USA hip-hop turntablists and party DJs, and dig deeper than the likes of Qbert, Cut Chemist, Mix Master Mike and their peers, a reoccurring name is DJ T-Rock. Raised in North Carolina, T-Rock honed his DJ chops in Atlanta in the Third World Citizens crew along with DJ Faust and Shortee, before joining Mr. Dibbs 1200 Hobos crew in the 90s. Since 2005, T-Rock has released a series of records with New York producer Squashy Nice on Why Records. Recalling the classic sample-heavy sound of late 90s instrumental hip-hop, the common thread across their albums is a vivid cinematic feel expressed in a multitude of ways.

In March, T-Rock will release his first solo album The Sounds In Their Heads through Why Records. In advance of its release, he has just unveiled two new singles, ‘Lucy’ featuring New Zealand singer Skyla Love, and ‘O.N.O’ featuring Android Love Affair vocalist Andy Greenfield. On ‘Lucy,' Skyla Love delivers some seriously sun-kissed neo-soul hooks over a stripped down boom-bap beat, acoustic guitar, and some old-school DJ scratches. With ‘O.N.O,' T-Rock taps into the dirty funk/fuzzy garage rock slanted production sound he’s explored on past records with Squashy Nice, letting Andy Greenfield round things out with a languid and dusty desert rock vocal.

You can stream both songs here via Soundcloud. The Sounds In Their Heads is available for preorder here. It will be available via all good digital music services from the 8th of March 2017.
