Earls Court is set to be demolished after Mayor of London Boris Johnson approved orders to make way for the surrounding area to be redeveloped.

The iconic venue's demolition will make way for four 'villages' and a 'high street' - creating 7,500 high-end homes and thousands of jobs. Though it's estimated the project will take around 20 years to complete.

The BBC reports how Boris Johnson was "acutely aware of the concerns" raised by residents but also added: "I'm in no doubt that the development will provide a massive boost not just to this part of the capital, but to London's wider economy as well."

The iconic venue, built in 1937, served as part of the 1948 Olympic Games ceremony, held various historic events and hosted the BRIT Awards until it moved to the 02 in 2011. It was also used in the 2012 Olympic Games for the Volleyball events.
