Cork City-based producer ELLLL describes her most recent sonic offering Romance as a "beat-driven collage with a playful and sinister narrative". The description is so perfect we're entirely positive that it's also what a socially constructed word like 'romance' really has meant all these years. And here we thought it was a candle-lit dinner and a good make-out spot.
On her new four-track project, ELLLL (Ellen King) releases her ambient low-tempo romantic dream, using dark textures and manipulated samples to fully immerse us in the emotion of it all. Listen below and get to know ELLL's creative process below.
The EP is also coming out on 12" vinyl and you can preorder it here.
Talk us through your new EP.
It's a 4 track EP written between Dec '15 and March '16. Most of the tracks I had been playing live in various reincarnations for a while, so I was extremely familiar with all the individual sounds and samples. When I recorded the tracks I didn't have any specific theme in mind, I just wanted to accurately represent my interests, personality and skills as a producer at that given time.
Where do you find inspiration?
Mostly from music I listen to, film scores, hearing things live. Learning new techniques or collaborating with people. I go through phases of being really fixated with certain genres too, it definitely rubs off on the way I write.
What risk would you take if you knew you could not fail?
I've no idea! Probably do something in a live setting that would completely take me outside of my comfort zone. Maybe using news instruments, or collaborating with someone in a new way or in completely different genre.
When was the last time you tried something new?
Last week actually. I learned how to solder and build a synth. Super satisfying!
What's the most challenging thing you've ever created?
Creating anything poses it’s own challenges in one way or another, if it didn’t the process would be pretty dull and unrewarding i think.
Which of your talents do you think people overlook?
Versatility. I’ll try anything once.
Lastly, what are you currently working on?
I'm consistently trying to finish tracks with the aim of having a wide selection to choose for another EP. I’m also working on a tape release with my side project Wry Myrrh (myself + Irene Buckley), and lining up events and workshops with Gash Collective, which is an Irish based all girl collective I run.
