Free copies of Jay-Z's upcoming Magna Carta Holy Grail album given out to Samsung Galaxy smartphone users will not count towards its position in the Official UK Chart.

The company will be giving away one million free copies of the album 72 hours before its official release on 4th July through the Magna Carta app. They reportedly paid $5 (£3.18) for each copy to be given away, instantly giving the album platinum sales status.

A spokesperson for the Official Charts Company said:

"Music which consumers receive free of charge, either as physical releases or downloads, have never counted towards the Official Charts and this release will be no different. Legitimate purchases of Jay-Z's album will count, however, as usual."

Jay-Z announced details of his 12th album earlier this week, with a three minute promo video for Samsung. The clip shows Jay-Z working in the studio on the upcoming album with Rick Rubin, Pharrell Williams and Timbaland.
