Geoff Travis is to receive the Pioneer Award, sponsored by The Orchard at this year's AIM Independent Music Awards.

Founder of Rough Trade Records and the Rough Trade Record Shop, Geoff will receive the award at the ceremony on 3rd September at London’s The Brewery.

Geoff set up the first Rough Trade store back in 1976 and the label two years later. He then set up the Blanco Y Negro label and signed the likes of Jesus & Mary Chain and James. 1999 saw him resurrect the Rough Trade label, with the help of Jeannette Lee, launching the musical careers of artists including The Strokes, The Libertines, Arcade Fire and Alabama Shakes.

He'll be the third recipient of the award, following previous winners Daniel Miller (Mute) and Laurence Bell (Domino). "There is not much that betters having respect from your peers," said Geoff on the news of his win. "So thank you AIM!"
