After months of build-up, nominations and debate, Canada has a new Polaris Prize winner Godspeed You! Black Emperor and their 2012 album Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend!.

The band, considered legends of post-rock after the release of their 2000 album Lift Yr. Skinny Fists…, fought off competition from the likes of Purity Ring, Metric and Tegan & Sara amongst others to claim the 7-year-old prize.

Claiming the award on their behalf, Ian Ilavsky of the band's label Constellation Records said that the band "unequivocally thank" those "who care about independent music and who think that independent music still has a promise to do something." The band will be giving their $30,000 prize fund to the Quebec prison system for instruments and education.

GY!BE, as the band are often referred to, have now joined the likes of Caribou, Arcade Fire and Feist in the group of Polaris Prize winners.
