I had an inkling this would happen when I posted that Saint Pepsi would probably be changing his name at some point in November last year.

In a post on Facebook back then, Ryan DeRobertis (irl name of Saint Pepsi/Skylar Spence) said this:

"just wanted to briefly let you know that a big boy corporation has a tiny problem with the name of one of my music projects! they were gracious enough to entertain the thought of a possible collaboration, a "meeting of the minds", but amicably decided that the potential liability of my future actions was too great a risk to consciously allow me to carry own using the moniker."

So Pepsi Co. didn't like the idea of a Saint Pepsi existing. Too bad for them. (Free advertising!?)

Anyway, he is re-emerging as Skylar Spence. The news was announced via his label Carpark Records and was accompanied with a video showing footage from the inspiration for the name: two characters from the 1996 film Everyone Says I Love You, Holden Spence and Skylar Dandridge (played by Edward Norton and Drew Barrymore respectively). The name itself is what Skylar's married name would be – something that definitely didn't happen in the film.

The same thing was the inspiration behind a song of the same name that appeared on his 2013 album Hit Vibes. It's a super tasty number that lives on the more future funk side of vaporwave, sampling Tatsuro Yamashita's 'Love Talkin' (Honey It's You)'. Listen to 'Skylar Spence' below; it's nice to hear the transition from this to his current post-funk pop sound featured in the snippet of music for the announcement.

Check out his first release for Carpark Records, 'Fiona Coyne'.
