Some of our earliest music discoveries have a way of staying with us throughout our lives, even as we continue to grow, and, in some cases, they even leave a lasting mark on us. On her appropriately titled debut single 'Old Soul,' 21-year-old Hackney native Amahla details how her discovery of soul greats like Otis Redding and Billie Holiday as a young child left a lasting impression on her. Taken from her socially and politicaly charged debut EP Consider This (which you really need to experience for yourself), she pays tribute to the classic soul and R&B records that helped her to shape and define her own voice. A slow-burning neo-soul song whose swaying groove, rippling church-like organs, and soul-stirring vocals drip with spiritual overtones, it's a loving nod to her past influences that easily avoids the trappings of saccharine nostalgia in favor of carving out a vibe and sound distinctly her own.
