HMV have announced details of a new app for both Android and iOS that will allow users to purchase albums using their smartphone, as well as other apps for downloading songs instantly using image and sound recognition software.

With former Vodafone executive James Coughlan now as head of HMV Digital in the UK, the company hopes to strengthen their online presence (their website relaunch is scheduled for next week): "I think it could be a blessing in disguise that HMV's been out of the game for this long," Coughlan explained to BBC Newsbeat. "There are so many services in the marketplace and there's certainly been lots of trial and error up until now that we can take key learnings from. It ensures we bring a service to market that will hit home with our consumers."

The newly reopened HMV store on Oxford Street will also receive a very special visit tomorrow: Paul McCartney will sign copies of his most recent album New in the same location where The Beatles recorded their 1961 demo that led them to sign to EMI. [via NME]
