HMV plans to almost halve its amount of UK retail outlets.

The advent of downloadable music and the ensuing lack of CD sales has inevitably resulted in problems for His Master's Voice, whose dog and gramophone logo nowadays seems somewhat obsolete. The chain currently has 223 branches across Britain, but intends to cut this figure by up to one hundred stores. This could lead to job losses for around 1,500 staff. Their decision hit the headlines last week, as one employee used HMV's official Twitter account to give a live commentary as 190 staff members were let go at the company's head office.
