Born and raised in Paris, Petite Meller is one of pop's most exciting nouveautés - mostly due to her jazzy, catchy single 'Backpack' that will see a proper release via Night Beach Records later this month.

Featuring an equally beautiful video directed by A.T.Mann and Napoleon Habeica - which she says represents a memoir of summer French holidays - the clip is an homage to French New Wave films such as Godard’s Pierrot Le Fou, and George Anri Cluzot's masterpiece L'Enfer. 'Backpack' is such an addictive song that we simply had to know how Meller composed it.

Here's what she had to say about it:

"I wrote 'Backpack' during a taxi ride. It was actually a melancholic slow melody which I hummed to myself. I still have this humming recorded somewhere on my iPhone. It was a kind of 'moment of revelation'. As the philosopher Slavoj Zizek says: 'you have to fall in love with your symptom' - I felt that finally I am loving my symptom and channeling what used to hold me back in a practical way.

"A month later I was sitting in the studio with my producer Amir Margalit, who is an Ableton genius, in front of a jumpy beat sketch we had just put together, and I recalled that melody, and immediately sang it as a chorus which fit perfectly in a new more uplifting way. Its funny how the lost melody also found a home.

"Afterwards, we added some tunes from my amazing sax player, and I beatboxed with my mouth for the whole song - because I'm never satisfied with the drum sounds you have on programs, I always prefer to do it myself.

"The verse lyrics i wrote like a story telling of my past, discovering sexuality for the first time, first love and disappointment, cynicism, childhood habits etc. and it all basically leads to this present moment which is finally which is where I am now.

"On the 'Backpack' Remix, a French band I admire called Naive New Beaters introduced me to Marlin, an 18-year-old kid from Paris, who was like 'I'd love to remix your song.' When I got his new remix back, my legs just couldn't stop dancing.

"We are now good friends, just met him in Paris."

Petite Meller releases her 'Backpack' single (digital and 7" vinyl) via Night Beach on April 28. We strongly recommend picking it up.
